Sleep Disorder Treatment: Differences between CPAP and BiPAP
Sleep apnea is one of the group of sleep disorder diseases that causes pauses in your breathing while you sleep and this can be very damaging to your health and immune system. Obstructive apnea is a result of throat muscle constriction and central sleep apnea is caused from a brain signal issue, while complex sleep apnea is less common, it means a combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea.
If you have been diagnosed with any of these sleep disorders, your doctor will recommend you to use a breathing PAP machine (positive airway pressure) like CPAP or BiPAP so you get the necessary oxygen that you are missing while sleeping. These machines are connected to a face mask you wear over your nose and mouth.
CPAP
This “Continuous Positive Airway Pressure” device provides pressurized ambient air through the mask, which helps eliminating apnea events during sleep by increasing air pressure right in your throat so the regular air doesn´t collapse while you are breathing. CPAP is the most common PAP device and has proven to be the most successful treatment available for treating sleep apnea and it is also the most affordable one.
BiPAP
Like a CPAP, is a Positive Airway Pressure but it has two-levels or Bi-level that works by sending air through a mask so you can inhale and exhale pressure. It is basically a machine that provides higher levels of pressure to treat your sleep apnea more effectively by offering two pressure settings, generally the amount of pressure is alternated depending on whether someone is breathing in or out.
The main difference between CPAP and BiPAP is basically the pressure settings, CPAP provides one pressure for inhalation and BiPAP two, one for inhalation and one for exhalation. Your doctor will let you know which one works best for you depending on the severity of your condition and other aspects like poor breathing or problems swallowing, if this is your case, a BiPAP might not be the best option for you.
